Transhumanists frequently address the obstacles presented by uncooperative populations, but how do we protect ourselves from uncooperative control structures? This issue becomes increasingly disturbing to me as I realize how much control is placed directly into the hands of our governments. It's been known for a long time that individuals have carried out almost every misuse possible in these positions, but it seems to me that few transhumanists are concerned with the danger associated with these individuals gaining access to some of these brave new technologies.

I think its very naive to believe that Western government is free from manipulation by individuals who have other plans for our societies. One thing that contributes greatly to my concern is the fact that these technologies we so praise create the perfect tools for the surgical removal of our freedoms, just by their nature. There seems to be a lot of implicit trust in Western government, as if it's inherently exempt from committing unthinkable atrocities, despite several historical demonstrations to the contrary.

My main concern is for the future of the human race; its survival and well-being. As transhumanists concern themselves with seeing new technology come to light, it seems to me that little attention is paid to the most important factor in the equation: the people in control. I must confess that I've not always been rigorous with my security philosophy for the future. Growing up with cyberpunk I've not really cared whichever way the political echelon swayed, but in this rare moment of sobriety I've come to believe this is one of the most critical issues at hand.

I just want to know that my fellow technophiles are maintaining a well rounded vision of our future.

Colonising the oceans with flexible communities will allow Transhumanists to follow their own path: politically, intellectually, and technologically.
