Online Chat

Should we start a thread where people can post their AOL/ICQ/MSN screen names in order to start a live online chat group? Forums are nice, but so are real time chats.

That's a great idea. I had a chat box widget on the site a while ago but the widgets seem to really increase page load times. When I have some time I'd like to add some pages to the network. One of them could be a dedicated chat page where we could schedule some real-time dialogues. The IM method would be alright too for the time being as long as we are all using the same protocol. Skype might be an option. We could all post our screen names in our profiles and then schedule a topic with this forum for a specific time. This might be tricky with all the time zones however. If anyone wants to initiate this, it will interesting to see the response. The book club fell a bit short on interest.

Well, chat channels on the web page really is not very populated. Especially when it comes to small communities like this.

It's much better to set up an IRC channel instead, and then have some online Java web client that is connected to it.

Collecting AOL/ICQ/MSN names might work, but when would a conversation start? I don't really see a meaning to use those softwares for chatting. It's good for chatting with one person, but inviting hundreds of people will just make them irritated. Every time I've been invited in MSN to a conversation with more than 10 people, 90% of them left within the first twenty seconds...

count me in
bezoar85@hotmail.com ,contact for messenger.
Actually I'm surprised that a techy community as transhumanism hasn't a realtime chat yet.
If there is anybody with the necessary skills to create one I would be interested in helping creating one.
An IRC could work too, but a classic java could attract more people.

As I said before, irc is the best way, and on the web page there could be a Java web applications which connects to the irc network.

Hehe, I've been idling on #transhuman @ irc.freenode.net since the day it was created.
I've only seen two people online. One of them was online the first day, the second one about a month later...

It would be fun if we could get more people into this channel.

I actually think having a field in people's profiles for instant messenger contact information would probably be the best way for everyone's profiles to be disseminated.

by the way, mine is: jay_syn@hotmail.com

I'd love to join a live chat. Can you send out a notice to the ning transhumanist community, of when it would be?
I've participated in some instant messaging hosted by forums, that has worked better for me since I try to keep software off my computer that will slow it down.
