About Me:
I am a student studying mathematics at the university of cambridge, my main interest is in Artificial Intelligence. I suffer from Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, so I'm currently taking time out of my studies. Having a chronically malfunctioning body certainly sells the idea of nanomedicine and/or uploading...
Areas of interest:
Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy, Mathematics: "The real progress that needs to happen is progress in communication and information, progress in knowledge and intelligence and progress in morality and purpose. These are the things that I like to work on."

Is transhumanism a “Religion”?

At its best, life can be great: I’m thinking of my first kiss, but life is seldom this good - often it is crowded with minor and sometimes major personal disasters; most people believe that their lives will end in the ultimate tragedy – their own death ... [continue reading ->]

New blog - transhumangoodness.blogspot.com

I've just started a shiny new blog called Transhuman Goodness, I like to talk about transhumanist issues, with a focus on ethics, AI and mathematics.

Here's my most recent post:-

Deathism vs. Battered Person Syndrome

Over the weekend a striking analogy hi… Continue

Is transhumanism compatible with religion?

I'll say something about whether transhumanism is compatible with religion: I don't think it is. There is no logical incompatibility, other than the logical problems inherent in religion. I think that the values behind the two ideas are fundamentally at odds with each other.

The big religions that we are familiar with (Islam, Christianity) basically say that humans are sinful, inferior beings, and that without god to help us out and show us what to do, we are doomed. They go even furthe… Continue

The Power of God

*** Seems like an odd post coming from a committed atheist like me, right? Surely I, like you, think that religion is an outdated class of memes that will soon be blasted away by the penetrating logic of rational atheism? Think again people. Religion is virulent and philosophically strong, and we, as rational people, need to wake up to its strengths and mend our own philosophical weaknesses ***

I've been thinking about the continued power and influence of the var…

Hi. Stopping by to say, greetings. Glad to see intelligent minds getting to work on the AGI problem. Good luck!

ok! i didn't know that. I just chose it as a theme because it looked nice. I'm glad it doesn't say something really dodgy!

Dude, is that Chinese character part of your personalization?

I think you might want to check them for correctness, because if that's supposed to be the Japanese "ai" for "passionate love" (a cunning pun on artificial intelligence, I must commend you for great awesomeness!) I think the bottom part is different.

Yeah, I witnessed some pretty weird conversations - people buying multi-coloured sex organs from eachother.

SL is made out to be this free - 'spirit-of-the-internet' sort of thing, but you have to pay (cash is called Lindons) for half-decent clothes / skins.

"many sex parts"! I'm beginning to wonder what goes on in SL... ... ...

Thanks for the help with the group.

SL is ok, but I'm a little worried about the many sex parts - I'm not sure what the legal implications are and I certainly don't want to be associated with any illegal sites / materials.

As for the ogre-creature - I thought it would be cool to have something different. Most people have avatars that look more or less like ordinary people, but you do get a few giant flying ducks and fox-people.

Thanks, that was quite insightful.

Well it's very hard to tell. I've studied Ben Goertzel's Novamente system in some detail, and I doubt it will work ever, never mind in 10 years, although that's just my opinion. He does have some clever ideas, particularly the "self-modifying evolving probabilistic hypergrphs", which is actually very close to an idea I had myself. (Remember that i'm only a fourth year maths student, so my opinions don't count for much!)

Of course there are a fair few other people all working on AI. I'm working on AI, or at least will be when I start a PhD.

I think any predictions about when AI will be succesful should come with very big error bars, because I think that AI depends on conceptual and mathematical advances. It's a bit like trying to predict in advance when someone like Isaac Newton would simultaneously invent mechanics and calculus; it could have happened any time after the greeks, but it actually happend circa 1690. I think AI will be the same - perhaps a lone individual or a small group will have some brilliant insight, invent a new field of mathematics and write an AI all within a few months. The rest of the world won't know about it until afterwards.

Anyway, nice to see another British person on here!
